The MS Excel file (MS Office 2000) for download below
outlines a 5-day mine safety train-the-trainer course offered by Michigan
Technological University. The course is designed to provide surface metal/nonmetal mine instructors with a broad knowledge of mine safety and
health. These materials are designed to
prepare trainers to train surface metal/nonmetal
mines. Coal mine and underground mine trainers would need additional information to be
adequately prepared.
The course has the following features:
1.
Trainers are provided with addresses, and (or) phone numbers and
email addresses of training material sources.
2.
Attendees will become familiar with the Federal Mine Act and MSHA
standards.
3.
Attendees will go through the various materials indicated in the
attached lesson plan.
4.
Attendees will know how to use 30 CFR as presented in hard and
electronic copy (Internet) format.
5.
Attendees will be prepared to train supervisors how to comply with
MSHA standards.
6.
Attendees will receive a certificate and will be guided through the
process of applying for MSHA certification as a mine safety trainer.
The course outline lists the materials used to teach
the course and the sources of these materials including phone numbers
and/or email addresses. The outline will be useful even for those not
taking the course because of its broad listing of topics and information
sources. Note that the course includes several hours of homework including
videos, reading assignments and various required plans, so the time spent
will be well over the 40-hour requirement. The 5th day of the
course addresses mine-specific training and should be done at the mine
site.
Also available for download is the Michigan State
Grants Program’s training plan for underground metal/nonmetal mines.
This training plan is unique in that it divides each topic into general
and mine specific areas to be covered.
Disclaimer – This information represents an effort
to make a complete training plan meeting MSHA’s Part 48 requirements for
Part 48 underground metal/nonmetal mine new-miner training and a detailed
lesson plan for training trainers. It is, however, important for users to
ensure that the use of the training plan receives the written approval of
the MSHA district office having jurisdiction over training in their areas.
