Part 46 Competent Person Training
Workshop Materials
To help surface mines in the state of
Michigan comply with the new Part 46 training standards, the Michigan Mine Safety and
Health Training Program has held 'Competent Person' training workshops throughout the
state. Training organizations, such as ourselves, here at the Michigan mine Safety &
Health Training Program, have long done safety training for mines. But certain types of
training, such as new miner training and task training have always been done better by
someone intimately familiar with the mine site and its specific hazards. Part 46 allows
the mine owner to designate experienced employees to be 'Competent Persons' who can do
this type of training. Most miners, however, know little about the mechanics of training
itself, and these workshops have been designed to help them become better instructors. To
